The Crit’Air sticker addresses 3 distinct issues

  • Ecological
The primary aim of the Crit’Air sticker is to avoid pollution peaks caused by cars that are too old and polluting.
  • Economic
the State is estimated to spend nearly €3 billion a year on health, according to the Report of the Senate Committee of Inquiry into the Economic and Financial Cost of Air (July 2015).
  • Public health
All citizens are affected by air quality, and it is strongly advised not to take part in sporting activities when there are pollution peaks.

How does this anti-pollution sticker work?

The idea behind the sticker is to be able to classify vehicles by engine and age, so that their pollution levels can be assessed. The sticker comes in different colours: from green (for electric cars) to dark grey (for the oldest diesel cars).

What do you risk if you don’t have your Crit’Air sticker?

Since 1 July 2017, if you don’t have a sticker, it’s illegible or fraudulent, you face a fine depending on your vehicle type (HGVs, coaches and buses risk a larger fine).

For private cars and other vehicles, the fine is €68; for HGVs and coaches, it is €135. If the fine is not paid within 45 days, it will be increased to €180 (€375 for HGVs and coaches).
